About the show.... The story of Momotaro is a very famous folktale from Japan. It is a tale of bravery and how a very special, longed-for boy grows up to become a Hero. While on his Quest to rid the village of the evil Oni Monsters, Momotaro recruits help from some very unlikely friends --- a monkey, a dog and a beautiful pheasant. This show has elements that make for interesting theater --- a need for a perilous Quest; Fantasy Characters such as Oni Monsters, the River Spirit, a dancing Forest, and the Kamikaze Wind; and an Epic Battle between the forces of Good and Evil. It also has gentler elements such as the women dancing with their babies as they do their washing by the River. Remember that in Kabuki Theater certain elements are accepted as routine --- costumes are lavish, sets and props are minimal, actors may portray inanimate objects or forces, and if an actor is wearing BLACK he or she is considered INVISIBLE.
