The opener "Spring Is Here" shows the people of the Empire of China bringing flowers to celebrate the newness of life and rejuvenation of Spring.

During "See the Beauty All Around You" the Emperor tells his closest counselors about his plan to allow the flowers to chose his successor. They each are jockeying for position. Each secretly hopes to be named Successor to the Throne. They think the Emperor has really lost his mind.

"A Successor to the Throne" is sung by the entire cast as they anticipate which child will become the next emperor of all China.

Deshi, the boy with the green thumb, is excited that the Emperor has decided to let the flowers choose his successor to the throne. Deshi is absolutely sure that he can grow the most "Magnificent Flower" in all the land.

"Summer Comes" is sung by all of the people as they work in the fields during the hot summer growing season.

"The Road of Life" is sung by the eccentric shopkeeper Madame Wong to the mothers who have come secretly hoping to find exotic seeds to replace the non-growing seeds given to their children by the Emperor.

Deshi's mother and the other women sing this song as they lament the changing of the seasons from the color and warmth of Autumn to the cold and grey of Winter in "Autumn Lingers on the Breeze."

Deshi sings "O Little Seed" after his mother encourages him to continue caring for his little seed.

The people sing and shiver as they patiently wait through the ice and snow of "Wintertime."

"Worthy to Admire" is sung by the Emperor to the people as he chooses the one child in the kingdom who is worthy to become the next Emperor of all China.
