Setting
The Country: Flat painted to represent the gnarled roots of a large oak tree, oversized acorns and hickory nuts, a quilt or tablecloth, picnic basket
The City: Flat of oversized “storybook” room divider, slipper “bed,” upside-down teacup and saucer “table,” silver platter mirror, thimble “cup”
Costumes
Though not necessary when performed as a Reader’s Theater production, simple costume pieces such as mouse and cat ears, bird wings, and tails would be sufficient to suggest characterization. Full costumes for a main stage production could really help.
