Just read a post about the tearing down of the old Provost Elementary School Building. I have been watching the new building being built this past year, and now they are demolishing the old one. Although I had no children who attended that school, I did make a lot of friends of children who attended there. I produced and directed 5 years of musicals at that school and even wrote several shows especially for those kids. Good times!
Thinking back, I enjoyed my experiences there. The administration was very interested in offering extra opportunities to these students. Because it was a Title I school, it was eligible to go after certain extra funding to serve the families in this low income area. The school offered programs in violin and piano, art, dance, sports, and sometimes drama, as well as after school clubs for special interests and home work help.
There were a lot of talented students coming up through that school. I enjoyed having them in my shows. It was such a joy to see so many work so hard to learn their lines and dances and songs and get the timing just right to present such polished performances. Many got their first taste of acting at Provost and have since gone on to Junior High and High School to continue performing in theater and music and dance productions. I am so proud of them!
The old building's stage was hard to work with because getting on and off of it was problematic. However, it had good sound and adequate stage lighting. With a little ingenuity, the other idiosyncrasies could be dealt with. I hope the new building has a good stage and I hope they continue to do a school musical at Provost every year!
